A prominent Grade II listed building in the heart of Daventry, The Conservative Club has just celebrated its 140 year anniversary. Due to its age,  some of its original architectural features had begun to deteriorate under the pressures of time and environment. Spectrum was appointed to sensitively restore the front facade, a detailed blend of stone and decorative render, using specialist heritage techniques, bespoke access methods, and conservation-grade materials throughout.

This multi-service project required expert understanding of listed building protocols, meticulous planning, and a highly skilled workforce. The result is a beautifully refreshed pale cream-coloured facade with striking cerulean accents, completed with minimal disruption and maximum respect for the building’s historic character.

The Site

This project began with a visit from Michael, Spectrum’s technical consultant and a local resident of Daventry. After speaking with the Club, he carried out a full survey of the building's elevation and left-hand side so a quote could be prepared.

The survey revealed widespread render delamination, stepped cracking above a window, flaking paint on stone sills and rainwater goods, as well as spalled brickwork.

To restore the building sympathetically and in line with listed building regulations, we delivered a tailored restoration plan that included:

The Challenge

As with many historic town-centre properties, The Conservative Club presented several logistical and environmental constraints that could have delayed or disrupted works - but thanks to Spectrum’s planning and expertise, these were factored in from the outset and handled without issue.

The property sits on a narrow High Street, where bollards positioned just over five metres from the facade restrict the use of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs). Rather than pursuing costly permits to remove the bollards or park equipment on the road, an impractical option given the Club’s central location, our team adapted their access strategy to rely on scaffold and pole systems, avoiding delays and reducing disruption to the public.

Adding further complexity, the road this property is on hosts a bustling market every Tuesday and Friday. This meant foot traffic around the cordoned-off area increased significantly twice a week. Spectrum’s team adjusted their schedule accordingly, prioritising low-impact or upper-level works on market days and ensuring the pavements remained safely accessible for passersby throughout the project.

Each of these challenges was resolved without delay to the programme, a testament to the benefit of working with a contractor experienced in heritage access and town-centre logistics.

Our Approach

Render Repairs and Colour Matching

Our team began by manually stripping back damaged render and identifying areas of severe delamination. Using Keim Uniputz, a breathable, mineral-based render ideal for heritage properties, we applied a scratch coat followed by a smooth topcoat. We also rebuilt the decorative areas by hand.

To maintain visual consistency, the Keim coatings were custom prepared at the factory to colour match the previous colouring of the facade, to create a unified appearance that stayed true to the original palette. The bulk of the facade was completed in a pale cream colour, while embellished stucco features were highlighted in a striking cerulean, echoing the building’s historic detailing.

Brick and Crack Repairs

Stepped cracking above one of the arched windows was addressed with the installation of helibars, mechanically fixed into raked-out mortar beds and repointed to ensure stability and long-term strength. Spalled bricks were either repaired in place with colour-matched mortar or replaced where necessary. Keim tinting was then used to seamlessly blend new brickwork into the existing facade.

We restored this facade from top to bottom, bringing pride back to this high street.

Stone Window Sill Restoration

The original stone sills, previously covered in flaking paint, were carefully stripped using the DOFF system, a low-pressure super-heated steam cleaning method that gently softens and lifts paint without damaging the substrate. Once cleaned and prepared, each sill was recoated using the Keim silicate-based coating, creating a smart, crisp contrast against the cream-coloured walls.

Decorative Finishes and Detail Work

‘Bullet holes’ left from the scaffold fixings were repaired with render (where necessary) and overcoated to ensure no shadowing or flaws. Our team took the time to ensure that every section of the facade received equal attention and a consistent finish.

Results

The restored facade now presents a vibrant, confident face to Daventry’s High Street once again. From stabilised masonry to colour-matched render and repainted stonework, Spectrum delivered a comprehensive transformation that respects the past while strengthening the future.

As demand grows for specialist restoration contractors who can work to conservation standards, this project stands as proof that thoughtful repair, the right materials, and experienced hands can make all the difference. The project could easily be used as a benchmark for best practice on other listed refurbishments within the region.

Spectrum continues to work with heritage property owners, surveyors, and planning officers across the UK to protect and preserve some of our most treasured architectural assets - one facade at a time.
