Introduction

This property in Wimbledon features a striking glass atrium that has historically presented cleaning challenges for many contractors due to its limited accessibility. The Site

The property’s narrow outdoor areas, adjacent public pathways, and proximity to a busy road created unique access difficulties. Previous contractors heavily relied on scaffolding to clean the glass atrium roof, significantly driving up costs. As a result, the client could not maintain this area as frequently as desired due to the prohibitive expenses. Fortunately, our intervention has saved them thousands of pounds in access costs, allowing for more frequent cleaning and consistently sparkling windows.

During our pre-site assessment, we identified several key issues:

• Multiple access challenges due to the building’s design.

• Limited access to one side of the glass atrium via a flat roof.

• Blocked gutters.

• Dirty panes of glass at varying angles.

The Project

Spectrum’s patented pole system enables us to reach areas no other contractor could. Designed and 3D-printed in-house, this equipment allows our team to access all parts of the building’s exterior efficiently and cost-effectively. The glass conservatory roofs and other hard-to-reach areas posed no challenges for our team. While previous contractors avoided these areas due to health and safety concerns—often resorting to costly scaffolding towers—Spectrum’s lightweight, manoeuvrable poles provide safe and effective access.

The ability to bend and pivot the poles in any direction was particularly helpful when cleaning the angled panes on the opposite side of the atrium, which could only be reached from the other side. By bending our poles, we could clean both sides of the atrium from a single location. Our technicians are fully trained in using this system, ensuring quick and safe operations without the need for scaffolding. The same pole equipment was also used to clean the building’s other windows, up to four storeys high, without requiring MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) or scaffolding.
