What are the Benefits of Using a Doff System? - Which Substrates does it Clean?

All types of material used in construction will age and discolour over time. Environmental factors like damp, extreme temperatures and direct sun can accelerate this aging process, leaving surfaces like wood, stone and brick looking stained and in need of maintenance. Heat and cold can cause paint and varnish to peel while wet; humid conditions can result in the growth of algae, moss and mould. Properties that are exposed to high levels of rain, or those with persistent leaks, can also suffer from water staining.

The Doff cleaning process is able to remove virtually all types of staining and discolouration from the surface of a building. Quick, easy to use and effective, the Doff system can return a building to its original aesthetic condition.

What are the main benefits of using a Doff System?

The Doff system has a number of key benefits over other cleaning processes. The most important is its ability to remove almost all types of staining and discolouration using low-pressure steam. The Doff system is able to use low-pressure jets because it heats the steam to an incredible 150˚C. When this superheated steam hits the organic or inorganic substance discolouring the surface of the material, it removes it without damaging the underlying substrate.

By using heat instead of high pressure to clean stone, brick, wood and other surfaces, Doff machines minimise the risk of damage to the substrate and allow operatives to clean a variety of surfaces quickly and easily. This is a major advantage when cleaning soft and brittle surfaces like aged stone and brickwork.

Another benefit of using the Doff system is that it is highly effective. The superheated steam removes staining and discolouration quickly, especially when complementary chemical cleaning products are used to aid the process. Doff cleaning machines can be used to remove varnish, paint, oil-based products, moss, algae, mould, rust staining and almost all other types of discolouration from the surface of a building.

Why use a Doff machine for restoring brick?

Brick is one of the most commonly used construction materials in the UK. Used to build commercial and residential properties of all shapes and sizes, brick is a versatile and affordable building solution. However, while brick is strong and relatively durable, over time it becomes more and more brittle and the surface of the brick becomes softer.

As a result, high pressure jets of water can easily result in damage to the surface of the brick. Pressure washing brick can cause pockmarks and other irregularities to appear on the surface of the building. This can give the façade an uneven finish and leave the property looking worse for wear.

As Doff machines use heat rather than high pressure to clean impurities from brick, they are much less likely to damage the surface. In fact, if used correctly, Doff machines will cause no damage whatsoever to the substrate during the cleaning process. This makes the Doff system the ideal choice for property owners and managers that want to renovate a brick surface without risking damage to the substrate.

Why use a Doff machine for stone?

Like brick, stone becomes soft and brittle over time. Using pressure washing, or other inappropriate cleaning processes to remove staining and discolouration can result in damage to the stonework. As a lot of stonework on period properties is beautifully carved, this damage can have a significant impact on the aesthetic of the façade.

The best way to protect stone during the cleaning process is to use a Doff machine. Like brick, stone responds well to cleaning at high temperatures. The 150˚C steam is able to lift virtually all types of staining and discolouration from the surface of stone, without damaging the substrate.

Doff machines are designed so that water doesn’t penetrate deeply into the surface being cleaned. This allows stone, and other materials, to dry quickly, further minimising any potential damage to the surface.

Why use a Doff machine for Wood?

Wood is commonly used to clad buildings and add detail to a structure. As wood is a natural material, it is prone to the growth of algae, moss and mould. It can also suffer discolouration caused by rust staining and pollution. Doff machines can remove most impurities from wood quickly and easily. This includes paint, varnish and other finishes that might have been applied to the surface of the timber.

Why use a Doff machine for graffiti?

Graffiti is a serious problem for many property owners in the UK. As soon as graffiti is applied, it begins to soak into the surface of wood, brick or stone. The deeper the graffiti penetrates, the more difficult it is to remove. Cleaning the surface as quickly as possible is the best way to thoroughly remove graffiti and leave a surface looking like new.

A Doff machine can remove virtually all types of paint and ink from brick, stone and wood. This means it is the ideal tool for contractors cleaning graffiti from property exteriors. In most cases, even dried-on graffiti will come off a surface when the Doff system is used. Chemical products can also be applied to aid the cleaning process.

How can a Doff machine be used as a sterilisation tool?

Because Doff machines heat water to 150˚C, they can be used to sterilise, as well as clean, a range of surfaces. A lot of contractors use Doff systems to clean hospitals, schools and other public spaces. As they are portable, Doff machines offer a convenient and effective way to clean surfaces that need to be kept germ-free.
