Spectrum use eyebolts on a day-to-day basis, and by doing so we have become experts in our field.
Eyebolts are permanently fixed anchor points that are used by a single user in a fall arrest or restraint situation and for rope access. Spectrum use eyebolts on a day-to-day basis, as we carry out a large percentage of our property restoration and maintenance services via rope access. This makes safe working and the testing of equipment that enable us to work safely at heights of paramount importance and by doing so we have become experts in our field.
Our team carry out six monthly eyebolt testing inspection for four large residential blocks located in Clapham. We ensure that these eyebolts are inspected to ensure maximum safety, ensuring that the eyebolts and the test procedure conform to the requirements of BS 7883: 2005.
This is to ensure they full comply to the standards outlined by that British Standard so as not to invalidate any insurance policy - putting people’s lives at risk.
The process of carrying out an eyebolt testing service involves pulling out and extracting each eye bolt, ensuring the said eyebolt is manufactured from materials suitable for corrosion conditions e.g. stainless steel if any part is external.
Visual inspection of all parts of the eyebolt assembly is carried out and in accordance with section 2.2 of BS 7883:2005 that the marking is clear and indelible. A pull test is then carried out with a device called “hydra jaws.” At the recommended force (Kn) for a given time.
Our operatives are fully trained and conversant with the requirements of eye bolt testing as detailed in BS 7883:2005. This requires periodic inspections to be carried out at intervals no more than 12 months for fall arrest devices and 6 months for rope access devices. It also states that examinations are to be carried out by a competent person and all details recorded.
Rules and regulations on eyebolt testing state that they should always be checked for safe use following the correct procedure. We recommend tying in an eyebolt testing service along with your specific maintenance needs, such as window cleaning.
As improvements in safety procedures evolve so the standards for testing and installation continually change, and we take great responsibility in keeping our clients up to speed on the latest requirements. As the standards were updated in 2019 it is important to ensure that not to be performing tests under a previous older standards. It is important to also note that some eyebolts that may have conformed to previous standards may not comply to updated requirements.
Is it expensive to make sure your eye bolts are conforming to the most recently updated standards? Yes, it can be. However, as a contractor that operates with eye bolts every day - we can offer clients temporary solutions to this. For example, if an eye bolt is no longer compliant or if it in any way fails, then we can set up a portable anchorage. This allows our clients to still have safe means of access, which is always the priority.
It’s extremely vital that your eyebolts meet with the latest requirements to ensure maximum safety, and our specialist team at Spectrum are here to help you do exactly that. Let’s keep everyone safe and secure, together.
Our team were able to successfully safety check the eyebolts on these residential blocks, providing the buildings with up to date safety regulations.
Safety for clients and for our team is the top priority here at Spectrum.
