TORC cleaning is a specialised method used for the gentle and effective cleaning of masonry surfaces. It employs a low-pressure, swirling vortex of water, fine inert granulate and air to delicately remove dirt, pollution, biological matter, paint and other surface contaminants without causing damage to the underlying substrate.
The TORC system is an evolution of the JOS system, providing a more advanced, precise and environmentally friendly option. It features a modulated low-pressure rotary motion that allows for the thorough cleaning of stone and brick surfaces. This modularity ensures that the cleaning process is adaptable to various types of dirt and stains, as well as different degrees of surface sensitivity.
Key advantages of the TORC cleaning system include its ability to preserve the integrity and appearance of the cleaned surface while effectively removing even the most stubborn deposits. The system is especially favoured by restoration experts for use on historic buildings where traditional abrasive methods like sandblasting would be too harsh, potentially causing irreversible damage. TORC cleaning is also environmentally friendly, using minimal water and natural, fine granulate that does not contribute to surface erosion.
While often placed alongside TORC cleaning as a viable stone cleaning method, JOS cleaning is actually its predecessor. It was designed with the same principles in mind: a swirling vortex motion and the use of fine, inert granules. However, JOS cleaning is known for using far larger quantities of water, around 45 litres per hour, making it a less practical and environmentally-friendly method of stone, mortar or masonry cleaning. While JOS cleaning can still achieve satisfactory results, it is undeniably inferior to the newer TORC cleaning system.
DOFF and TORC are both highly effective cleaning systems for building facades but serve different purposes.
DOFF uses high-temperature steam (up to around 150˚C) at low pressure to remove biological matter like moss and algae, as well as some paints. The surface being cleaned does not suffer any damaging pressure, thermal shock or deep saturation and dries within minutes.
On the other hand, TORC employs a mixture of low air pressure, water, and fine granulate to create a gentle swirling vortex. This system is adept at cleaning delicate surfaces and ingrained pollutants, such as carbon staining or efflorescence, without causing abrasion. While DOFF is optimal for eradicating organic stains and killing spores, TORC is generally preferred for sensitive surfaces needing a softer touch. Both methods are environmentally friendly and chosen based on the cleaning needs of the substrate.
TORC cleaning is strongly preferred for facade cleaning on historic or listed buildings. The system is specifically designed to gently clean sensitive surfaces without causing damage. TORC uses a low-pressure vortex of fine inert granules, water and air, allowing it to effectively remove various types of surface build-ups such as carbon stains, efflorescence, and even graffiti, without the abrasive impact associated with traditional methods like sandblasting or pressure washing.
The controlled nature of the TORC system ensures that the integrity and original appearance of delicate substrates are preserved. It is often selected for restoration projects because it can provide a deep clean without eroding the stone or brickwork, which is crucial for maintaining the historical authenticity and structural integrity of listed buildings.
By using TORC, property managers and conservation professionals can be assured that they are using the preferred method for safe but effective masonry cleaning.
