What is Stone Cleaning?

Here at Spectrum, we are experts in specialist stone cleaning and maintenance. That’s because we know that the reputation of your business lies behind the face of your building. If your façade is made of stone, over time it can become dirty and tired-looking. Which means it won’t be creating the ideal first impression.

Unlike some other building exteriors, you can’t just give stonework a fresh lick of paint. Just like render, stone needs to be cleaned using specialist equipment. That’s just one of the many services we offer here at Spectrum.

We can restore almost any stonework including cornices, windowsills, keystones, window surrounds, ashlar blocks, arches, quoins, copings and pier caps, corbels, porticos, columns, date stones and plaques, as well as balustrades.

Why Stone Cleaning is Effective

Keeping a building clean is critical for its well-being, especially in the UK where the weather can be harsh and unforgiving for long periods of the year. If the exterior of your building is partially or wholly made of stone, as is common with many older structures (and many new ones), this can lead to problems.

For example, dirt and moss can gather on the surface, which can cause unsightly blemishes as well as providing shelter for animals and other plants to take root. This can then cause further long-term damage. Water ingress can also be a serious consideration for stone buildings.

Stone cleaning is the process of cleaning these stones to ensure that they are in the best possible condition and looking their best. Often this involves using specialist cleaning equipment as well as gaining access to potentially dangerous parts of the building.

Often, the decision to clean is made on a town or street basis, but it may be up to the individual owner to carry out the cleaning.

The Difficulty of Stone Cleaning and Restoration

There is often a lack of consideration given to the range of natural materials being dealt with when cleaning stone. Some of the stone used for building has a susceptibility to deteriorate, either due to lack of cleaning or even during the cleaning process.

In addition, materials such as sandstone, limestone, granite, brick and terracotta are often joined by lime mortar. The interaction of these materials is key to the overall appearance of the building. Decay may also require that repairs are made before any cleaning can be carried out, or it may further complicate the issue.

Another key difficulty is deciding where to stop, as overcleaning can cause damage or cause the building to stand out too much. Cleaned stones may also require some form of treatment to prevent premature damage once exposed.

Three types of stone cleaning and masonry methods are generally used. These are physical, chemical and special techniques (which can involve ultrasonic equipment, heat lances and surfactants).

What Can Stone Cleaning Be Used For?

TORC
Stone Cleaning

The TORC system is a low-pressure vortex which uses a mixture of air, fine inert powder and relatively small quantities of water. It is particularly effective for the removal of carbon, dirt, scale, micro-organisms and all types of atmospheric pollution from brick, wood and stone.

DOFF (High-Pressure
Stone Steam Cleaning)

The DOFF system complements the JOS system and is the natural answer to the removal of surface coatings such as bitumen, oil, grease and other disfiguring materials. Here you can see brick cleaning underway. A unique combination of heat and pressure is used to cut through and remove unwanted matter without eroding the underlying surface.

Removing Lead
Paint From Stone

While lead paint is unlikely to do you any immediate harm, it can be dangerous if it is flaking or chipping. If you want to remove it, it’s best to use a professional service who know what they’re doing. We have experience with removing lead paint and can deal with the issue swiftly and safely.

Graffiti Removal
From Stone

Our state-of-the-art equipment tried and tested processes. In-depth understanding of exterior surface cleaning means we can deliver unsurpassed standards of cleaning, while mitigating the risk of damage to the surface material.

Paint Removal
From Stone

The main reason for paint removal is to restore a building to its original glory. A steam pressure washing system is used, if necessary, in conjunction with chemicals to strip off the specific layers in question to an exact level, returning the surface to its original face.

What Our Customers' Say?

Sarah

Block Management

As a Block Manager I look for reliability, integrity and professionalism, Spectrum have not only gone above and beyond, they keep surprising us each time! Lucian is always willing to help, he has an incredible charisma and I can't thank him enough for the support he has provided us at HAUS! I look forward to continuing working with Spectrum, and wish them continuous success!

Alex

Facilities Manager

Spectrum used a ladder-less gutter cleaning system which was able to reach our gutters approximately 12m above the ground. The ladder-less gutter cleaning method meant we didn’t have to hire a cherry-picker or scaffolding, which would have been expensive and time-consuming to install and use. Spectrum staff were able to show us video recordings of the inside of the gutters during and after the clean, and also emailed the footage to us once the work was complete. Spectrum have been professional, polite and thorough in their work and I would highly recommend Spectrum for their gutter cleaning service.

Nick

Spectrum provided a top-class service from the outset, at tender stage, through to the completion of the contract. The works required the use of both BMUs and rope access.
