Stone is a widely used building material in the UK, known for its renowned strength and durability.
Stone is a widely used building material in the UK, known for its renowned strength and durability. However, this doesn't mean that the stonework on your property is indestructible. Increased industrialization means that atmospheric pollution is testing the very capability of stone to withstand the attack from acid rain and carbon pollution.
Our team recognise the value of high quality external repairs as the correct approach minimizes further damage and related effects from occurring in the future.
In this project, a structural repair was firstly carried out to rectify the defects identified on the stonework, this was then followed by the cosmetic repairs. The primary concern in this project was to ensure the stone was structurally sound so that cosmetic repairs could be carried out.
Before beginning an operation on stonework, the probable cause leading to defects is investigated it was discovered that the lead flashing was the cause of the erosion of the stone rather than protecting the stone! As most Surveyors will testify, erosion is accelerated when moisture within the pores of the stone cannot readily escape and frost attacks moisture laden stone causing cracks and spalling.
The first step was to thoroughly clean the stone using the Doff cleaning system. This is a fast and efficient cleaning method that utilises low pressure but very high temperature steam. This proven method with steam effectively removes stains without damaging the surface of the building.
Cleaning the surface before carrying out any repairs, is an extremely important part of the process. After cleaning previously unseen small cracks may well be identified. This also allows an exact colour match to be achieved, rather than a colour match attempted when the stone is dirty. Following this, the required repairs took place ensuring structural integrity of the stone.
Once structural integrity is established the cosmetic repairs take place using stone colour matching materials.
The process of stone colour matching is a skill that is essential when carrying out any stone restoration service. Small samples of the stone are sent to a laboratory to determine its perfect match. This enables a seamless repair and is a step within this project that is vital in making sure that the results are aesthetically impressive.
One challenge that was also faced within this project was meeting the challenges of other defects which of course our team of professional operatives managed to solve.
While carrying out the main repairs and investigating the root cause of the problems, issues were identified with a movement joint that needed resealing and attention to cracks in the lintels above the windows.
Our team went above and beyond, as they always do, for all clients and carried out additional work at no extra cost to ensure a long-lasting repair.
